Cherokee fry bread is a classic Native American recipe: soft, chewy flatbread fried until puffed and golden. Serve with honey, jam, or toppings, or use as a base for Indian tacos.
Ingredients
Directions
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together.
- Slowly add warm water, stirring until dough just comes together (you may not need all water; dough should be soft but not sticky).
- Gently knead on a floured board until smooth and elastic, but do not overwork.
- Divide into 4–8 balls. Flatten each into ¼-inch thick discs or strips, poking a small hole/slit in the center for even frying.
- Heat 1–2 inches oil in a deep pan to 350–370°F (175–188°C).
- Carefully lay bread in hot oil, away from yourself. Fry until golden on both sides, flipping once (about 1–2 minutes per side).
- Drain on paper towels. Serve warm, topped as desired.
