This South African trifle is a classic layered dessert made with sponge cake, jelly, custard, cream, and fresh fruit. It’s a festive, colourful, make-ahead dessert that’s especially popular for family gatherings and holiday tables.

  1. Dissolve the jelly crystals in boiling water and allow them to cool slightly.
  2. Place the sponge cake cubes in the bottom of a trifle dish and spread with jam if using.
